Delivering the Try phase

Delivering the Try phase

Welcome to the Get Into Rugby Try series of small non-contact games, designed to help total beginners learn how to play Rugby. Rugby is an evasion game where players try to avoid contact and find space to run forwards in.

Because of the Law that the ball has to be passed backwards, this means that the ball carrier has to run forward with the ball. This is the basic principle on which the game is founded.

To start with, players may find the concept of passing backwards difficult and so this is introduced in the TRY section gradually.

All of the games in Try should be non-contact/modified contact and, for this reason, we recommend using touch or tag Rugby in the delivery of the Try phase. In touch Rugby, to make a tackle, defenders should touch an attacker on the waist with both hands (teachers and coaches should make sure it is a touch and not a push). This will simulate the good practice players will need later when playing contact Rugby.

Tag rugby is also an easier way to understand the principles of the Game and will allow your players to enjoy their Rugby and progress in a safe and enjoyable environment.
